Studies show that living in a cluttered environment can trigger anxiety, stress and create cognitive burden. One of our core missions at The Upholstery Concierge is that we want to help you make spaces that create ease, but who has the time to live with a broom and mop in hand whilst actually remembering to live and live well?? With only 24 hours in a day, 8 of which should be spent asleep, that’s next to impossible.
Organizing uses a lot of your brain’s executive functioning and with everything that’s already happening day to day, tasks that need this executive functioning can seem daunting and next to impossible. I know it does for me as well, so that’s all the scientific research EYE(I) needed. One way for my brain to break down an unorganized room is to remember that clutter can be broken down into 4 groups:
things to be thrown out,
things to be cleaned,
things that aren’t in their place, and
things that don’t have a place.
Looking at the whole picture can be daunting but the first step is to get to the first thing we can reach, define it and place it. Does it somehow seem more achievable? Let me know in the comments or send me a dm on instagram(@theupholsteryconcierge)
It’s important to remember things aren’t gonna stay perfect in a space you live in, and I think I can go ahead and say that’s okay(from a reformed perfectionist, that’s growth). One day, you’ll be happy that the kids grew up knowing that they didn’t live in a museum and you provided a space where they feel safe to spill, mark and play? I’m asking, tell me please.
When organizing, it’s important to remember to build systems based on habit. The keys thrown by the door might not mean you’re creating clutter as soon as you’re home but that you need a lil tray on the table to hold those keys. Build habits that fit your lifestyle. We know we go to the gym every morning, so as nice a concept is that the shoes live in the closet, maybe have a lil storage ottoman by the door that can not only house the shoes but on which you can sit to take them off and put them on. Build the habits, simplify your routine around your natural instinct and they will be instinctive to follow. Finally, remember in all of this to Bring calm to your environment. It’s my mission to remind people that the minute we leave our homes a taxi man is bound to upset us, so whatever brings calm and peace to our souls needs to be embraced in our homes. A comfortable, bold colored couch to lose myself in will always do it for me. How about you?

The source of all the “scientific research” mentioned was one of my most listened to podcasts. Chasing Life with Dr. Sanjay Gupta. Check out the episode titled, “Why Your Brain Loves An Organized Space”.
